Sparse, subtle and determined as much by silence as by sound, hers is a music created using deft, fleeting strokes," wrote the BBC Music Magazine of Ayumi Tanaka's 2021 album, Subaqueous Silence. Her new album, Windflower, reconfirms the potency of a musical approach in which intensity is conveyed through restraint and focus. This time, however, the music is for the most part collectively created, with all three players shaping the pieces in the moment. Tanaka, the Wakayama-born and Oslo-based pianist, has collaborated with Norwegian drummer Thomas Stronen for a decade already, in contexts including the band Time Is a Blind Guide and the Bayou trio with reed player and singer Marthe Lea. The association with American bassist Thomas Morgan is a new development. The album features eight luminous free ballads, plus Ayumi's composition "La Source.

A striking new debut from the Emissary Quartet, [moment]um explores movement, change, and momentum through a program of contemporary works for flute quartet. Inspired by the Japanese concept of "Jo-Ha-Kyu" - a progression from calm beginnings to rapid culmination - the album unfolds as a carefully shaped arc, moving from the stillness of Herman Beeftink's Frequency to the driving energy of Jennifer Higdon's Steeley Pause. The program features music by living composers including Nicky Sohn, Heike Beckmann, Sung-Hyun Yun, and Kai-Young Chan, while showcasing the unique sound world of the flute quartet. Delicate lyricism, rhythmic intensity and percussive effects all contribute to the album's sense of forward motion. Founded in 2009, Emissary Quartet has established itself as a leading flute quartet, with a strong commitment to contemporary music and collaboration. The ensemble has performed and taught across the United States, appeared at the National Flute Association Convention and Mid-Atlantic Flute Convention, and was among the few flute ensembles ever to reach the live quarterfinal round of the prestigious Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition.

This compilation is an exquisite curation of classical music's most introspective and soul-stirring moments. Designed for the listener who seeks a sanctuary in sound, the tracklist moves seamlessly from the sweeping, cinematic melancholy of Mahler and John Williams to the delicate, crystalline precision of Bach and Debussy. Opening with the hauntingly beautiful Adagietto from Mahler's 5th Symphony - famous for it's use in the soundtrack of the film Death in Venice -, Side A sets a tone of profound reflection. The journey continues through the iconic, weeping violin of the Schindler's List theme, and the tender ache of Faure's Apres un reve, offering a rich, orchestral embrace. The flip side transitions into a more intimate, nocturnal space. From the timeless, moonlight-drenched keys of Debussy to the shimmering textures of Saint-Saens' Aquarium, Side B focuses on the soloists. The album closes with Beethoven's "Pathetique" Sonata.
