This box set comprises all the operas and sacred works Otto Klemperer conducted for EMI Columbia and HMV. Oratorios by Bach, Beethoven, Brahms and Handel are accompanied by operas of Beethoven, Mozart and Wagner. There are also rehearsals and listening playback sessions for the recording of Mozart's Don Giovanni and a Bonus CD with recollections from artists who sang in Klemperer's opera performances. Solti's "Falstaff" still shines brilliantly as a masterpiece! Solti's overwhelming interpretation is vividly revived here with the beauty of the Decca sound of the time. Although Verdi’s "Falstaff" has an important place as the last opera of the 1950s, there are not many recordings of it compared to the popular work "La Traviata". Among them, the 1963 recording board by Solti who still shines brightly (released under the name of "RCA Italian Opera Orchestra & Chorus" at that time). Solti, a great conductor born in Hungary, recorded "Falstaff" in the 1990s, but the singers of the 1963 recording remain unmatched and their overwhelming interpretation is the original version. Also, the wonderful sound by Decca at that time vividly conveys Solti's accurate interpretation.
The father of Domenico Scarlatti (he of the 555 harpsichord sonatas), Alessandro Scarlatti (1660-1725), a successful musician in his own right, composed a number of popular opera serie in his day, Griselda (1721) being the last. Bruno Maderna (1904-75), one of the finest Italian composers of the 20th c., understood this music intimately, and his conducting, rarely captured, is often wondrous. Complimented by a cast of singers including Mirella Freni, Heinz Ruhfuss and Ernst Haefliger, this 1960 Hannover performance of Griselda is a rare market sighting and offers true listening enjoyment.
