About

Edward Elgar’s Cockaigne Overture portrays London at the turn of the 20th century as a pulsating world metropolis. Cheerful and colorful, it takes the listener on a stroll through the hustle and bustle of the city. Premiered in Manchester in 1908, Elgar’s Symphony No. 1 quickly found its way into the concert repertoire. His second and final symphony followed three years later. This is the second album from Alexander Soddy and the Mannheim National Theatre Orchestra, produced in cooperation with the Musikalische Akademie Mannheim.

Critic reviews

  • “A beautifully recorded live performance from Germany of Elgar’s First Symphony, by the Mannheim National Theater Orchestra conducted by Alexander Soddy, is a continuing reminder of Elgar’s increasing international standing.”

    Fanfare, Want list, November 2025

  • “This provides a “modern”, quite driven account which nonetheless still plumbs emotional depths, beautifully played by the Mannheim orchestra which sounds entirely at home in this quintessentially English music.”

MusicWeb International, Nominee for recording of the year, December 2024

  • “The stately opening march is sonorous and dignified… Soddy’s slightly more animated speeds lend the music more lift and a sense of forward momentum without compromising its grandeur.”
