Among the outstanding though less well known mid 20th c. Soviet-era violinists, Boris Goldstein (1922-87), praised by Heifetz in his youth, ranks highly. Unfortunately Goldstein’s discography is very limited and these testimonials are rare. On the second volume of The Art of Boris Goldstein, IDIS presents three recordings from 1977-78 that finds the violinist performing with organist Claus Kühnl. On this CD, Goldstein and Kühnl present the famous Ciaccona by Tommaso Vitali, the Dialogue, op. 63 by Berthold Hummel (1925-2002) and the D minor Sonata by Joseph Gibbs (1699-1788).
