The Preface

Chapter 1

'Dorian Gray? Is that his name?' asked Lord Henry…

'The story is simply this,' said the painter after some time.

Lord Henry stroked his pointed brown beard…

The painter considered for a few moments.

Chapter 2

Dorian Gray stepped upon the dais…

Hallward painted away with that marvellous bold touch…

No, you don't feel it now.'

After about a quarter of an hour…

Dorian Gray lifted his golden head from the pillow…

Chapter 3

When Lord Henry entered the room…

So that was the story of Dorian Gray's parentage…

'We are talking about poor Dartmoor, Lord Henry…'

He played with the idea and grew wilful…

Chapter 4

'Never marry a woman with straw-coloured hair…'

'Well, I found myself seated in a horrid little private box…'

Dorian Gray leaped to his feet…

Lord Henry watched him with a subtle sense of pleasure.

As he left the room…

Chapter 5

Mrs. Vane glanced at her…

The lad muttered something to himself…

'You have a new friend, I hear…'

At the Marble Arch they hailed an omnibus…

Chapter 6

'My dear Harry, my dear Basil…'

'Pleasure is the only thing worth having a theory about…'

Chapter 7

Dorian Gray grew pale as he watched her…

As soon as it was over…

She looked at him in wonder and laughed…

After a little while, he hailed a hansom…

Chapter 8

As he often remembered afterwards…

'Marrying Sybil Vane!' cried Lord Henry…

'My dear Dorian,' answered Lord Henry…

'Well, would you believe it. A week ago…'

As he closed the door behind him…

Chapter 9

'No,' said Dorian Gray, 'there is nothing fearful about it…'

'I will try and do something, Dorian, if it would please you…'

'Let us sit down, Dorian,' said the painter…

Dorian Gray drew a long breath…

Chapter 10

In two or three minutes there was another knock…

When the sound of their footsteps had died away…

Chapter 11

There were moments, indeed, at night…

There are few of us who have not sometimes wakened…

And so he would now study perfume…

He discovered wonderful stories, also, about jewels…

And so, for a whole year, he sought to accumulate…

For, while he fascinated many, there were not a few…

Yet one had ancestors in literature as well…

Chapter 12

'They must interest you, Dorian…'

'I must speak and you must listen…'

Chapter 13

His hand shook and the candle fell…

How quickly it had all been done!

Chapter 14

He sighed, and took up the volume again…

At last the door opened and his servant entered.

'You must have something to do with it…'

As the chime struck one, Campbell turned round…

Chapter 15

But at dinner he could not eat anything…

The men laughed, and Mr. Chapman got up solemnly…

Chapter 16

Suddenly the man drew up with a jerk…

Dorian walked to the door with a look of pain in his face…

James Vane stood on the pavement in horror.

'You bewilder me. Let us talk of someone else.'

Chapter 18

Suddenly from a lumpy tussock of old grass…

Dorian heaved a sigh of relief…

Upstairs, in his own room, Dorian Gray was lying on a sofa…

Chapter 19

Dorian said nothing, but rose from the table…

The elder man lay back and looked at him…

'I am not the same, Harry.'

Chapter 20

He took the lamp from the table…
