It is Lutoslawski’s last completed work, the Fourth Symphony (1993), which most fully embodies his highly personal reinterpretation of Polish music’s romantic past. But another late piece, Chantefleurs et Chantefables (1990), offers clear evidence of how satisfying that reinterpretation could be. These ‘songflowers and songfables’ represent a refinement rather than a dilution of Lutoslawski’s hard-won modernity, and they are all the more effective for their brevity – the longest lasts less than three minutes.

That ‘hard-won modernity’ did not imply a total rejection of such traditional genres as symphony and concerto – though some would say it should have done. Certainly Lutoslawski’s Symphony No. 2 (1966-7) remains a problem-piece, mainly because the material of its first movement seems designed precisely not to generate a traditional kind of symphonic argument. The second movement has far greater breadth, but it can hardly serve to ‘explain’ the first movement in retrospect; it would be better on its own.

Twenty years later, in his Piano Concerto, Lutoslawski was more alert to the possibilities of creating a viable symphonic style out of the interaction rather than separation of lyric and dramatic materials, and although the concerto’s range of stylistic allusions can be disconcerting, a good performance can turn such ambiguities to positive ends.

This is certainly a good performance. If the recording by Krystian Zimerman, the work’s dedicatee, summons up shades of Rachmaninov, Paul Crossley’s less forceful but no less well-characterized reading seems closer to Ravel. Esa-Pekka Salonen is a sensitive accompanist, and the Sony sound is consistent with what I described, reviewing Salonen’s earlier Lutoslawski recordings (11/94), as “spacious clarity as well as spatial depth”, even if it “may not bring the orchestra far enough forward for some tastes”.

This recording of Symphony No. 2 must rank as superior to either of the composer’s, and although Dawn Upshaw is occasionally rather shrill in Chantefleurs et Chantefables the performance as a whole is well judged. As for the brief Fanfare, it has a splendidly brassy exuberance.'

We come now to more modern fare, and firstly to a very colourful, immediately enjoyable work in Castelnuovo-Tedesco's Second Violin Concerto, written for Heifetz in 1933. This work is sub-titled I profeti (''The Prophets'') and the names of Isaiah, Jeremiah and Elijah head its three movements. Heifetz clearly relishes the score's attractive lyricism, and Wallenstein's conducting is full of personality too. The 1954 stereo recording is more than adequate. Howard Ferguson wrote his First Violin Sonata in 1931, when he was 23. This is a gently flowing, somewhat reflective piece, apart from a brief central Allegro furioso movement, to which Heifetz responds with alacrity. Elsewhere his rather sharp-toned, virtuoso approach tends to be somewhat at odds with the work's nature, and a rather close 1966 recording does not help. He is more suited to the early Sonata of Karen Khachaturian, who is Aram Khachaturian's nephew. On the evidence of this work, like his uncle, Karen writes in an outgoing, vigorous, uncomplicated style, which Heifetz plays in a cheerful, extrovert fashion. The recording was made at the same sessions as the Ferguson sonata. Francaix's String Trio is a typically brief, slight, but cleverly written piece, and here Heifetz and his two colleagues relax to give a delightfully spry, pithy performance, which is matched with a good 1964 recording. . . .

Heifetz was without doubt a uniquely gifted artist. It has been a very rich experience for me to explore these five discs, and I can do no more than give them the highest possible recommendation.

Following the release of Franz Reizenstein's Cello Concerto, it is now our pleasure to present to you his Piano Concerto No. 2. Like Berthold Goldschmidt, Reizenstein fled from Berlin to England in 1934, before the immigration laws had been tightened. Generally speaking, Hindemith's influence dominates in Reizenstein, though his effusive energy producing highly spirited and less sober results clearly distinguishes him from British and American composers like Rawsthorne and Berkeley. Reizenstein himself performed the solo part at the premiere of his Piano Concerto by the BBC Orchestra under Rudolf Schwarz in 1961. What stands out in this concerto is it's exuberant virtuosity, which produces brilliant interplay between the soloist and the orchestra. Reizenstein's Serenade in F numbers among the works adhering more closely to the "New Objectivity" emanating from Germany than to colorful impressionism. The last work heard here is the Cyrano de Bergerac concert overture - a powerful, energetic work and the symphonic portrait of an extremely popular stage figure working with a surprisingly modest orchestral ensemble. Here the composer in no way overlooks Cyrano's more romantic moments.

Mozart's piano concerto in E flat KV 271 has long been known as the 'Jeunehomme' - but it was discovered in 2004 that it was actually composed for Louise Victoire Jenamy; Mozart misspelled her name as 'jenomy' in a letter to his father in 1778 and so created a misunderstanding that lasted for over two centuries. Apart from Idil Biret's "culturally, historically or aesthetically significant" performance of Rachmaninoff's 3rd Piano Concerto with the Boston Symphony Orchestra conducted by Erich Leinsdorf on 22 November 1963, another memorable performance of the 3rd Concerto was at the Istanbul Festival in July 1983 with the Leningrad Orchestra conducted by Alexander Dimitreev. After her performance the orchestra's conductor Alexander Dimitriev visited Idil Biret at her home and said the following: "We were quite intrigued when we learnt that you wanted to perform Rachmaninoff's 3rd Piano Concerto with our orchestra as women rarely play this work.
