American Salute: Spirit of the Nation is a tasteful collection of orchestral pieces devoted to the history and vitality of the United States. Performed by a series of orchestras, highlights include Aaron Copland's sweeping "Hoe Down," "Battle Hymn of the Republic," and Ferde Grofé's "Grand Canyon Suite 'Sunrise'," during which the anticipation of the sun hitting the lip of the canyon is palpable. The introspective moments of "Variations on 'America'" and Samuel Barber's "Adagio for Strings" are also a nice touch, as they offset the collection's more bombastic moments. Basic versions of the "Star Spangled Banner" and "Stars and Stripes Forever" round out the set.
From the West Point Military Academy comes this great album that presents the Military Academy Concert Band and Glee Club. These wonderful organizations have a rich history, and continue to perform many concerts throughout the year that draw in thousands of listeners. This album features music for West Point including "The Official West Point March," "Pride of the Point," and "Alma Mater," along with patriotic classics like "Battle Hymn of the Republic" and "The Stars and Stripes Forever." Led by Lieutenant Colonel Frank G. Dubuy, the U.S. Military Academy Band and Glee Club play beautifully on each piece, allowing the listener to experience exactly what the Band sounds like "in concert." It is the diversity, excellence in performance, and technical showmanship of the Academy Band that places it at the top of it's class.
Oscar Peterson Trio - "Very Tall (Verve Acoustic Sound Series)" / Very Tall, released in 1961, features the first partnership between Oscar Peterson and vibraphonist Milt Jackson. The quartet set (which also includes bassist Ray Brown and drummer Ed Thigpen) swings as hard as one might expect. Highlights include "On Green Dolphin Street," 'John Brown's Body' (a jam on 'Battle Hymn of the Republic') and 'Reunion Blues.' Verve's Acoustic Sounds Series features transfers from analog tapes and remastered 180-gram vinyl in deluxe gatefold packaging.
