Swedish Jazz History- a series of album compilations released by Caprice Records- chronicles jazz in Sweden with representative recordings up until the 1970s. Volume 11 is a comprehensive set of four albums with a total of 62 tracks, including some unissued items. It presents a vast selection of music by artists such as Alice Babs, Monica Dominique, Nannie Porres, Monica Zetterlund, Lars Gullin, Georg Riedel, Bernt Rosengren, The Swedish Radio Jazz Group, and more. Many sources of studio and live recordings are used from different locations in Sweden. This album reflects Swedish jazz of the 1970s, characterized by internationalization and intercultural influences. Foreign Sweden-based artists like Red Mitchell, Maffy Falay and Okay Temiz worked with Swedish musicians. For instance, with its Turkish influences, the Sevda group was a forerunner in what would later develop into the World Music genre. The 1970s was a musically rich decade where older jazz coexisted with new, freely improvised forms, influenced by both American and European avant-garde artists. Different kinds of Fusion, mixing jazz with other styles and expressions, became popular, such as Jazz Rock/ Jazz Funk.
Trombonist Jim Robinson played professionally from World War I onwards. In the 20s he made his first recordings as a member of the Sam Morgan Jazz Band. He gained greater fame with the resurgence of interest in early New Orleans jazz as a regular member of the bands of Bunk Johnson & George Lewis. He also led his own band and was known for his deep, wide-toned & robust tailgate style of trombone playing. This 1965 session, recorded at Preservation Hall, features Johnny Wiggs, cornet; Raymond Burke, clarinet; Bob Greene, piano; Allan Jaffe, tuba; Yoichi Kimura, drums. On CD for the 1st time, it features 12 songs including 2 previously unissued songs & alternate takes.
Ode To O is the second release of the Ogjb Quartet, a cooperative group that features four longstanding leaders in modern improvised music, saxophonist Oliver Lake, cornetist Graham Haynes, bassist Joe Fonda and drummer Barry Altschul. Each group member is a composer in his own right and a master on his chosen instrument. The new release, which follows the highly acclaimed Bamako (TUM CD 050) released in 2019, again features compositions contributed by each of the group's members as well as two collective improvisations. The album is named after Barry Altschul's composition dedicated to the late Ornette Coleman.
Alto saxophonist Jim Snidero brings the sum total of his experiences to the fore on Main Street, including those as a leader as well as a sideman with Frank Wess, the Mingus Big Band, Jack McDuff, and Toshiko Akiyoshi. Here he draws upon a quarter-century of touring experiences for a trip through some of the American experience via a cycle of new compositions and two covers. With bassist Linda Oh, drummer Rudy Royston and Cuban pianist Fabian Almazan, Main Street offers fresh original material, imaginative arrangements, inspired soloing, and cohesive yet spontaneous group interaction.
Featuring Lin Halliday. The "Tough Town" is Chicago, and on this 1991 debut recording of the jazz vibe player, Jim Cooper captures it's essence- it's blues and grit, but also it's sophistication and it's sentiment. Cooper spent his life in Chicago, growing up at 83rd and Cottage Grove in the 50s, when that deep-southside community throbbed with the pulse of nightclubs and jazz joints. He's joined by Chicago jazz legend Ira Sullivan who usually plays a variety of instruments on sessions but here he plays tenor sax only. Also Bob Dogan, piano; Dan DeLorenzo, bass; Charlie Braugham, drums and Alejo Poveda, percussion.
This is the solo debut by Chicago pianist/synthesist Jim Baker, previously recorded in settings ranging from duets to Ken Vandermark's Territory Bands, and from third-stream projects (with Guillermo Gregorio) to rock groups (with Nicholas Tremulis). Having previously collaborated with reedists (Fred Anderson, Kyle Bruckmann, Nicole Mitchell, Ken Vandermark, Mars Williams) and with various trios (bassists Harrison Bankhead, Josh Abrams; cellist Fred Lonberg-Holm; percussionists Avreeyal Ra, Michael Zerang), Baker set himself the seemingly-paradoxical task of recording an album of free improvisations - on both piano and analogue synthesizer - which would have a "somewhat or somehow tuneful" character. Baker has been described as "deeply unusual."
Jim Galloway returns for this second collection of Christmas songs on Sackville. This 1992 quartet session also features pianist Jay McShann. There is a mysterioso version of "Silent Night", imaginative arrangements of hackneyed popular songs ("Rudolph" and "Mommy Kissing Santa Claus"), sensitive ballads ("White Christmas" and "The Christmas Song"), jazz flavored tunes ("Christmas in New Orleans" and "Harlem") and a couple of McShann's specialties, a rhythm based romp ("Christmas Candy") and a reworking of traditional blues ideas ("Christmas Baby"). McNeely, now a celebrated veteran himself, has earned ten nominations of the Grammy Awards and worked as conductor/composer/soloist-in-residence with a handful of radio orchestras of European major cities including Copenhagen, Frankfurt, etc., besides leading his own group.

Released in 1966 on Verve Records, Jimmy & Wes (The Dynamic Duo), captures the only full-length studio collaboration between organist Jimmy Smith and guitarist Wes Montgomery. Produced by Creed Taylor and arranged by Oliver Nelson, Jimmy & Wes brought together two of jazz's most distinctive voices in an expansive big band setting. Recorded over three days in September 1966 at Rudy Van Gelder's Englewood Cliffs studio, the sessions featured a brass & reed-heavy ensemble and a top-tier rhythm section with drummer Grady Tate and bassist Richard Davis.
