There was no great cunning master plan that brought noted jazz instrumentalists Bob James {keyboards}, Lee Ritenour {guitar}, Nathan East {bass} and Harvey Mason {drums} together to form a supergroup. Released in October 1991, Fourplay - aided by the success of the smash single 'After The Dance' - peaked at No. 1 in America' s Contemporary Jazz charts for 33 weeks and sold over a million copies. It rose to No. 16 in the R& B rankings and No. 97 in America' s list of top pop records, The Billboard 200. Thanks to the group' s impeccable musicianship and it's internal creative chemistry, Fourplay created an immediately identifiable signature sound, setting the gold standard for smooth jazz in the 1990s. Now three decades old, the band s self - titled debut album was not only the blueprint for the group's sound but also functioned as a foundation stone upon which Fourplay built a remarkable career. Originally released in September 1991, Fourplay is now reissued by evosound, to celebrate the album's 30th Anniversary, as a multi-channel hybrid SACD including a 5.1 surround mix. A previously unreleased long version of 'After The Dance' is included as a bonus track {only available in stereo}. The remastering of the album was undertaken using the high-resolution digital transfers from the original analogue master tapes. The hybrid multi-channel SACD plays on both SACD and regular CD players.

Sometimes in the course of our exploration of potential titles to reissue, we come across a true gem that somehow escaped mainstream popularity. Our new SACD of Matador by trumpeter Kenny Dorham and his quintet is the latest and perhaps most crystalline example of this. It has only been reissued (officially) once in 50 years. When you hear it, you'll scratch your head raw that this under-appreciated gem has been missing for so long. Recorded in a single day in 1962, Matador contains the sprawling epic McLean-penned "Melanie" (a suite in three parts), as well as Dorham's smoldering "El Matador" and a stirring take on "Beautiful Love". Throughout the session, Timmons, Smith, and Moses provide sublime support while Dorham and McLean trade sinewy solos. Emotional musical exploration ties to readily approachable post-bop structure that make for a snappy, yet heady, mix of tunes that put a tap in your foot while engaging your head and heart. This Hybrid SACD contains an HDCD encoded Stereo CD layer which is playable on most conventional CD Players!

Jazz Hands is Bob James' third outing for evosound, following in the wake of 2018's Espresso and 2022's Feel Like Makin' LIVE. Produced by the pianist with his manager Sonny Abelardo, the ten-track album was mostly recorded during the months of the Covid pandemic and featured James in a number of different musical settings. It also features a stellar cameo from the ex-Gnarls Barkley singer CeeLo Green on the sensuous title track and includes production input from the legendary hip-hop turntablist DJ Jazzy Jeff, who rose to fame as half of the hit-making '80s/'90s rap duo, DJ Jazzy Jeff And The Fresh Prince, early samplers of James' music. Blending cool jazz tropes with funky dance floor grooves, blues-tinged ballads, cinematic mood pieces, and sensuous slow jams, Jazz Hands is the Missouri pianist's most eclectic album of his long career. Simultaneously classic and contemporary, it's Bob James at his majestic, ground-breaking, and timeless best. The album has been nominated for the GRAMMY AWARDS® for the category of "Best Contemporary Instrumental Album" - proving that the Jazz legend has no plans to slow down anytime soon.

In our first full collaboration with jazz royalty Patricia Barber, Impex Records is thrilled to announce our premier multichannel audio SACD/Hybrid disc of her elegant new album Higher. Recorded and mixed by long-time collaborator Jim Anderson, this spectacular set contains a unique eight jazz-interpreted art-song cycle that explore the mysteries that bind and illuminate us. Barber says of her six year creation of Higher, "I feel very much that this album is a manifestation of my hard-won harmonic evolution." She continues her blending of classical and modern idioms, both musical and lyrical, into a hybrid that plays to the best of both: classically-oriented with room to improvise and expand. The Impex Records exclusive SACD version contains four additional tracks: jazz standards "Early Autumn", "Secret Love" and "In Your Own Sweet Way", along with an expanded version of "The Opera Song" featuring lyric soprano Katherine Werbiansky. Both 5.1 and 2.0 SACD layers were transferred directly to DSD from original DXD (352.8kHz / 32 bit) files for astonishing reproduction of every living note and subtle expression in this truly seminal work by one of America's finest jazz auteurs. JACQUET, ILLINOIS
    Released
    Sep 16, 2014
In 1981 Tenor Sax legend Illinois Jacquet pursued his career-long dream of assembling a truly great big jazz band in the tradition of his mentors, Count Basie and Lionel Hampton, bands with whom he recorded and toured in his youth. He would apply all the wisdom and experience he gleaned as their sideman, as well as from his years of leadership over his many small groups, and would include songs he made famous with his "little big band" of the 1940s. The Illinois Jacquet Big Band was filled with luminaries and young stars, but unfortunately would only record one studio album entitled "Jacquet's Got It" on Atlantic Records, in 1987. Released now for the first time is a live performance of that band in all their swinging glory. The place is Burghausen, Germany, and the year is 1996, featuring a younger lineup than our previous release, but swinging hard nonetheless. Yalloppin' Hounds' cohorts Joey "G-Clef" Cavaseno, and Brian "Lord" Sledge are featured, along with Mike Grey, the son of trombone legend Al Grey of Count Basie fan, and Gray Sargent, Jacquet's long time guitarist discovery.

    STREISAND, BARBRA
    Released
    Mar 24, 2023
In the fall of 1960, New York City wasn't the same urban mecca it is today. Neither was eighteen-year old Barbra Streisand, who emerged on the Greenwich Village club scene at a small, cozy venue on West 8th Street called the Bon Soir, where she received rave reviews and wooed the crowd with her incredible performances. Within two years Streisand, whose magnificent interpretations of both standards and quirky, obscure cabaret tunes was a nationwide sensation, was knocking audiences dead with her nightly performance as Miss Marmelstein in David Merrick's I Can Get It For You Wholesale on Broadway. Sixty years, multiple Grammy, Emmy, Oscar, Tony and Golden Globe awards and nearly two hundred million record sales later, Barbra has for the first time authorized the release of a major portion of her Bon Soir performances, as captured in 1962 by Columbia Records. IMPEX Records - in conjunction with Sony Music Entertainment - is proud to present the SACD edition of the most sought-after recordings in Barbra's legendary career: Live at the Bon Soir: Greenwich Village, NY - November 1962. This gorgeous album features twenty-four brilliant performances personally selected by Barbra Streisand from the original Bon Soir master tapes and expertly mixed and mastered by Paul Blakemore and Jochem van der Saag, under the supervision of producers Barbra Streisand, Martin Erlichman and Jay Landers. SACD Stereo SACD Layer Designed to Play on Standard CD Players, SACD Players & Other SACD-Capable Players.

Few things get music fans more excited than the discovery of long-lost recordings of the past-especially if they present unique meetings between legendary artists. Such is certainly the case with Impex's new 180-gram 2-LP set Bennet/Brubeck Live 1962, The White House Sessions. Two remarkable visionaries at the peak of their powers, Dave Brubeck and his quartet and Tony Bennett (both with his group and with Bennett with trio) give hot performances of some of their biggest hits: Brubeck's revved up "Take Five," Tony Bennett's soulful "I Left My Heart in San Francisco," and both together on the hard-swinging "Lullaby of Broadway.

    ADDERLEY, CANNONBALL

    Nov 29, 2024
Cannonball Adderley's Only Blue Note Album Features Miles Davis, Art Blakey, Sam Jones, and Hank Jones: Somethin' Else Includes Reference Versions of 'Autumn Leaves' and 'Love for Sale' SOURCED FROM THE ORIGINAL ANALOG MASTER TAPES: HYBRID SACD PRESENTS 1958 LANDMARK IN DEFINITIVE SOUND Julian Cannonball Adderley's only Blue Note album, Somethin' Else, would likely forever be famous in music lore if just for the presence of Miles Davis. The iconic composer/trumpeter steps into the role of sideman on the 1958 set, one of just a handful of times he'd make such a move after the calendar passed the mid-1950s. Yet evaluating Somethin' Else strictly on Davis' involvement misses the big picture. Plain and simple, Adderley's jubilant work remains a jazz landmark due to the chemistry of it's Hall of Fame personnel, enthusiasm of it's participants, and sophistication of it's arrangements - not to mention the reference-grade production and inclusion of the definitive renditions of two jazz standards. Sourced from the original analog master tapes and housed in a mini-LP-style gatefold sleeve, Mobile Fidelity's numbered-edition hybrid SACD pays tribute to the record's merit and includes the bonus track 'Allison's Uncle.' This collector's edition provides a clear, transparent, ultra-dynamic, and up-close view of a cornerstone effort that witnesses Adderley and Davis sharing horn duty alone for the only time in their fabled careers - an arrangement that occurred as a result of Adderley having joined Davis' sextet a year prior. That vibrancy reveals itself openly on a reissue that provides full-range reproduction of an ensemble that also includes pianist Hank Jones, bassist Sam Jones, and drummer Art Blakey. Each and every snare hit, downbeat, and cymbal splash registered by the latter take on realistic proportions, blooming and decaying as they would in front of you on a stage. Jones' foundational bass lines register with uncommon depth and palpability, the litheness of the strings and fullness of the instrument epitomizing rhythm. Stellar, too, are the surefooted 88s. Sublime in scale, tonality, and attack, with the delineation such you can practically separate the white and black keys in your mind. As for that liquid interplay between Adderley and Davis? Lifelike in timbre, naturalism, purity, and presence. For reasons that extend far beyond the outstanding playing and flawless repertoire, Somethin' Else is a record you'll always want to watch and hear come together. As veteran critic Bob Blumenthal observed writing about the album four decades after it's release: 'The instant rapport achieved by the quintet is thus the product of much shared and common history, though the tensile strength that they create throughout created a totally unique feeling that can be attributed to the sensitive musicianship of all concerned, including the supposedly hard bopping leader and drummer.' Such emotion courses throughout every passage, and no where more obviously than on 'Autumn Leaves' and 'Love for Sale.'

First released in 1974, One is the second solo album by jazz keyboardist Bob James, Bob enlisted a string of experienced Jazz players including Steve Gadd and Idris Muhammad on drums, Grover Washington on Sax and Gary King on bass. Led by the maestro himself on keyboards, One is a lush, experimental Jazz Funk record, excitingly hovering at the forefront of where music can take your soul. Produced by Creed Taylor and recorded at the famous Van Gelder Studios, the record is a monument of progressive musical greatness. It was important to hip-hop as one of the most sampled tracks in American music. In the 47 years since the release of One, producers have interpolated or sampled 'Nautilus' over 350 times. This is a brilliantly written and performed genre-defying set of superb tracks. Evosound has remastered the album using hi-resolution digital transfers from the original analogue master tapes and will be manufactured in SACD. The hybrid SACD plays on both SACD and regular CD players.

Impex worked carefully with Di Meola, mixing engineer Roy Hendrickson (SPIN Studio), and mastering engineer Bernie Grundman to recreate the magic of Friday Night In San Francisco so these never-before-released solos and trios burst out of your system with striking clarity, dynamics and technical brilliance.
